Is this normal?

The most common questions · expected behaviour

This is completely normal. New heating elements have a thin protective coating from manufacturing that needs to burn off the first time the toaster runs. You may notice a slight odour or wisp of smoke during the first one or two cycles — this is the elements being “conditioned” and will disappear quickly.

We recommend running the toaster empty on the highest setting once or twice in a well-ventilated room before your first slice of bread.

No — the middle elements are working exactly as designed. They are deliberately set to operate at a lower temperature and are positioned at a different spacing from the outer elements. Because they run cooler, they don’t glow visibly red the way the outer bars do, but they are actively radiating heat onto your bread.

This dual-temperature configuration is what gives Toastley its even, consistent browning. If your toast is coming out at the shade you selected, your elements are working perfectly.

Yes. The Toastley toaster has a stainless steel body, and like all stainless steel appliances it will warm up during operation — this is expected. There are warning labels on the unit itself indicating hot surfaces.

To use safely: keep the toaster on a heat-resistant surface, leave clearance around all sides, and never cover the slots or place anything on top while in use. Full safety guidance is in your user manual.

This is by design. Once a slot has been used, residual heat is retained inside the toaster. Your Toastley automatically reduces the toasting time on the next cycle to compensate, so you don’t end up with a burnt second round at the same browning level.

If you toast in one slot and then immediately use a different slot, the timer for the second slot may also show a shorter duration for the same reason. The browning shade you selected will still be delivered — only the time changes.

A very slight difference in shade between the two sides of a slice is normal and is mentioned in the user manual. It’s a function of how heat circulates around the bread in the slot. Many customers actually prefer it — a slightly firmer underside and a softer top side holds butter and toppings better.

If one side is dramatically paler (e.g. no browning at all) after several cycles, that may indicate an element fault — see the warranty section below.

The flashing is a standby indicator. To put the toaster into sleep mode, press and hold the Cancel button for a few seconds until the screen dims. It will wake instantly when you touch any control.

Using your toaster

Bread types, settings & getting the best results

Sourdough contains less sugar than standard sliced bread, which means it browns more slowly — expect around 3 minutes for an average slice, or use a higher browning setting. Frozen bread similarly needs more time because the toaster first has to thaw the slice before browning begins.

For best results: use the dedicated Frozen setting for frozen bread, and either select a higher shade or run sourdough through a second short cycle.

Place each bagel half with the cut side facing inward (toward the centre of the toaster). The bagel mode toasts the cut side fully while gently warming the outer crust — exactly how a bagel should be served.

The 2-Slice (T25) is 880W with one touchscreen panel — ideal for smaller kitchens and households of 1–2. The 4-Slice (T45) is 1760W with dual touchscreen panels controlling each pair of slots independently, so two people can toast at completely different shades at the same time. Both models share the same browning, bread-type and timing logic.

Unplug and allow the toaster to cool completely. Slide out the crumb tray at the base, empty it, and wipe with a damp cloth. Clean the stainless steel exterior with a soft damp cloth — do not use abrasive cleaners or submerge any part of the toaster in water. Full cleaning steps are in your user manual.

Troubleshooting & support

When something isn’t working as expected

Try the following in order:

1. Unplug the toaster from the wall, wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in to reset the controller.
2. Wipe the screen with a clean, dry cloth — grease, crumbs or moisture can interfere with touch detection.
3. Make sure your finger is dry and you’re pressing the centre of each icon firmly.

If the screen is still unresponsive after a reset, this is covered under warranty. Open a support request →

Stop using the toaster immediately and unplug it from the wall. Do not attempt to open or repair the unit yourself.

Open a priority support request via our Amazon customer support form with your order number, the date of purchase, and — if you can safely do so — a link to a short video showing the issue. Sparking is always treated as a priority warranty case and we will arrange a replacement.

Yes — if a slot consistently produces no browning at all across multiple cycles (and the unit has previously been working correctly), the heating element on that side has likely failed. This is covered by your warranty.

Use our Amazon customer support form and include: your order number, the model (T25 or T45), and a link to a short video showing both slots running on the same setting so we can see the difference. We aim to respond within 5 business days.

If you haven’t heard back within 5 business days, please submit the support form again with “ESCALATION” at the start of your message along with your order number. If you have a video, upload it to Google Drive, Dropbox or WeTransfer and paste the link into the form — large attachments are the most common reason a submission doesn’t reach us.

Documentation and after-sales

All current manuals and quick start guides for the 2-Slice Toaster (T25), 4-Slice Toaster (T45) and 1.7L Electric Kettle (K-26A) are available on our Manuals page. Each PDF is the most recent revision — always download a fresh copy rather than relying on an old one.

If you bought through Amazon, start your return in Amazon “Your Orders” — then use our Amazon customer support form to send us your order details so we can prioritise the resolution. If the unit is under warranty, return shipping is covered.
