Toastley Long Slot Smart Toaster

Most toasters are built around a supermarket square slice, so a sourdough slice, a bloomer end or a long-cut artisan loaf gets wedged in sideways or toasted in two goes. The Toastley Long Slot Smart Toaster solves that with two extra-long slots that take a full-length slice end to end, or four standard slices at once.

And because this is a British kitchen, it has a dedicated Crumpets setting, the one thing almost every other toaster leaves you to guess at.

A crumpet is not toast. It is wetter and denser than bread, it browns on the flat base long before the holey top catches up, and on an ordinary toaster you end up with either a pale, rubbery top or a scorched base with a cold middle. Most people just run it through twice and hope.

The Crumpets setting is timed for exactly that problem: a crisp golden top with holes that still drink butter, and a base warmed through rather than burnt. Frozen crumpets go straight in, choose Crumpets then press Defrost.

The long slots are the point. A full-length slice of sourdough, a bloomer, a long-cut tin loaf, ciabatta halves and thick-cut toastie bread all sit properly inside rather than poking out of the top.

Crumpets, bagels, English muffins, waffles, teacakes and pikelets all have a setting of their own, and because the slots run the full length of the toaster you can do four crumpets in one go rather than two at a time.
